A famous American grunge band is Alice in Chains.  When they created their second studio album they named it Alice in Chains Dirt.  Let’s discuss the album and the group.

Alice in Chains Dirt came some time after the group was created.  They began in Seattle, Washington in 1987.  The group played grunge with elements of heavy metal.  They rose to fame in the early 1990s with the grunge movement.  They sold over 14 million albums in the US in the 1990s.  They made it to number one in the Billboard 200 on two occasions.  They also made 11 top selling singles.  In addition, there were six Grammy nominations.

Before Alice in Chains Dirt they completed a lot of work.  In 1989 Columbia made them their top priority.  Their first album was rushed into production after an early hit single.  It was called facelift and it came out on August 21, 1990.  It made it to number 42 when the Billboard 200.  It sold a measly 40,000 copies in six months.  But after MTV featured a single from the album, it sold 400,000 copies in only six weeks.  That’s success in the music business.

Drug abuse and depression is featured heavily in Alice in Chains Dirt.  That was due to the addiction of one of the band members.  He just completed rehab.  He immediately returned to heroin use.  The band claims they were using marijuana while recording

Much of Alice in Chains Dirt was written while the band was on the road touring.  That’s not easy to accomplish.  The resulting album was depressing.  The band members say they would expel their demons while performing.

One of the band members drew the album cover for Alice in Chains Dirt.  It included his girlfriend on the cover.  The band loved the design and immediately agreed that it would be used.  The album was completed in June of 1992.  It reached as high as six on the Billboard top 200.  Now the group was famous.  The album obtained multiple platinum and gold status.
